The ritual of marriage is one that binds us all, across all faiths and cultures. To be invited to bear witness to this is an incredible honour.

– Andreas Avdoulos, Documentary Wedding Photographer

My fascination with the traditions and rituals that bring us together, across class, culture, and faith, began years ago, at a family wedding.

I didn’t know it then, but those three rolls of black and white film that I photographed for myself would mark the beginning of my career as a documentary wedding photographer.

The approach: Nothing posed. Not always perfect. Just real moments, unfolding in real time in front of my camera.

At the time, I was working as a commercial photographer, creating images for international brands. The work was precise, polished, and controlled. But while I was doing this work, I developed an interest for a different way of story telling. Something that felt more honest and genuine.

As a Toronto-based documentary wedding photographer, I’ve been invited into the lives of hundreds of couples, both here and abroad. I bring my whole self to every wedding I photograph, but the work is only made possible by the access and trust that my clients provide me with.

Being a documentary style wedding photographer is a delicate role.

We’re there beside you and your families during one of life’s most meaningful days.

Our responsibility is to feel what’s happening, to observe with sensitivity, and to honour the access we’ve been given.

I’ve spent over twenty years doing this work, establishing a way of working that allows me to capture the type of images I do.

My approach is gentle, unobtrusive, and as stress-free as I can make it.

At each wedding, the goal is to create a set of photographs that feel like a first-person memory of the day.

The way things felt.

The way people laughed.

The quiet, romantic moments, and the wild, unhinged ones as well.

The method of doing this work is always the same, regardless of location; put people at ease, build trust, and make space for things to happen on their own, because beautiful moments happen naturally when people are left alone to simply be themselves.

The result is a series of intimate, candid and very personal images that reflect the heart of the wedding experience.

There are so many different styles of wedding photography, and so many trends, but honestly, I don’t think wedding photography needs to be more complicated than that.

Below you’ll find a portfolio of my work. If it aligns with how vision of how you’d like to spend your wedding day, let’s get to know one another.

If your date is available, we’ll schedule a call to get to know one another.

Creating this kind of work is based on connection, so each wedding booking starts off with a relaxed portrait session well before the wedding day.

I also photograph every wedding by myself as well - no fuss, no distractions. Just me and a couple of small cameras. I “embed” myself as a guest, allowing me to capture authentic moments without intrusion or interruption.

Coverage of the wedding story begins at the rehearsal. It’s a great way for everyone to get used to the idea of being photographed, and it allows me to meet the most important people in your life.

Since 2003, I’ve photographed several hundred weddings. Mostly close to home in Southern Ontario, from Muskoka to Niagara-on-the-Lake, and throughout Toronto. I’ve also documented dozens of destination weddings in the U.S. and across Europe.

Thank you for spending time here.

I look forward to hearing your story and learning what matters most to you.
